Biographical History
Constructed by Marcus Daly to haul the ore from his Anaconda Mine in Butte to the smelter in Anaconda.
The Butte, Anaconda and Pacific Railway Company was an independently operated railroad built by the Anaconda Copper Mining Company to haul copper ore, lumber, and miscellaneous freight from Butte to Anaconda, and to haul ingots from Anaconda to Butte for shipment to national markets. The railroad was first incorporated in May of 1891 as a way of circumventing the high freight costs of the other available line. It was constructed from 1892-1893.
The company was incorporated by Marcus Daly in 1892 to provide an alternative carrier to the Montana Union Railway for shipping ore from the Anaconda copper mine.
