Biographical History
John H. Hanna, a native of Pennsylvania, moved to Kentucky as a boy and lived most of his life in Frankfort. He was appointed clerk for the U.S. Circuit and District Courts and maintained a law practice in Frankfort for many years. He was also president of the Farmers' Bank in the capital city. Hanna amassed a large fortune and became known for his charitable works, including his strong support of the local Episcopal church, whose building he funded. Hanna was married twice. His first wife was the daughter of Judge Thomas Todd and his second was Mary Sophia Hunt, the daughter of John Wesley Hunt, the wealthy merchant and financier of Lexington. Hanna was engaged in some business ventures with Hunt. Both of Hanna's two children died in infancy.
