Biographical History

Bernice Dutrieuille Shelton was born in Philadelphia in 1903.

She was among the earliest African-American graduates of Girls' High, and became a journalist in the early 1920s. Shelton contributed regular features on social news and columns on other subjects to area African-American newspapers, including the Philadelphia Tribune and the Baltimore Afro-American,serving as both special correspondent and advertising representative for the Afro-American. She was active in a number of civic organizations including the YWCA, the Allied Roosevelt Clubs of Philadelphia, the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, and the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women's Clubs. She died in 1983.
