Administrator of the National Recovery Administration and the Works Progress Administration.
Hugh Samuel Johnson (1882-1942), American army officer and politician, was born in Fort Scott, Kansas. He entered the United States Army in 1903, and served in World War I. Johnson originated, planned, and directed selective service conscription in 1917 and 1918. He became a brigadier general in 1918, and retired from the military the following year. Johnson was the Administrator of the National Recovery Administration from 1933 to 1934, and the administrator of the . Works Progress Administration for New York City in 1935. He was also a lecturer, radio publicist, and editorial writer for Scripps-Howard newspapers, and authored The Blue Eagle from Egg to Earth in 1935.
