Keyes, Geoffrey (1888-1967) was born in Fort Bayard, New Mexico. He received his commission in the cavalry from West Point in 1913, and graduated from the Command and General Staff School in 1926 and the Ecole Superieure de Guerre in Paris in 1933. He was head of the tactics department at the Cavalry School from 1933 to 1936, and graduated from the Army War College in 1937. He was executive officer of 13th Cavalry, 7th Cavalry Brigade in 1938 and 1939, and served as chief of the supply and transportation branch at the War Department General Staff in 1939 and 1940. From 1940 to 1942, he was chief of staff of the 2nd Armored Division, and reached the rank of brigadier general in January 1942. He was deputy commanding general of the I Armored Corps in 1942 and 1943, and reached the rank of major general in June 1942. He was commanding general of the II Corps from 1943 to 1946, and received his promotion to lieutenant general in April 1945. His assignments after World War II included commanding general of Third Army in 1946 and 1947, and high commissioner for U.S. Forces in Austria from 1947 until his retirement in 1950.
Geoffrey Keyes was a United States (U.S.) Army officer. He graduated from the United States Military Academy (USMA), West Point, in the Class of 1917, and became a career Army officer. By 1942, Keyes was a brigadier general and at the end of WWII, he had attained the rank of lieutenant general (temporary). During WWII, he commanded the First (I) Armored Corps, Seventh (7th) Army, Second (II) Corps, Third (3rd) Army, and was commanding general of the U.S. Forces in Austria (USFA). After the war, he became the U.S. High Commissioner of Austria.
