Clem Hosking was born in South Australia and studied operatic singing under Miss Mary Wright. He served with the 45th Batallion A.I.F. in World War I. After the war he continued his singing career under the guidance of various Italian operatic teachers.

Edwin Clement Hosking taught singing in Sydney for over 30 years and was considered an authority of folklore and folksong. He was president of the Folklore Association of Australia and of the Celtic Society of Australia.
