Biographical History
Alfred Geer Hempstead was born in Waterford, Connecticut in 1894 and died in 1980 in Florida. He received a B.A. in history and government and an M.A. in economics from the University of Maine and earned a M. Div. at Bangor Theological Seminary. An Army veteran of World War I, he was ordained a minister in the Methodist Church and served pastorates at Mattawamkeag, Hampden Highlands, Brownville Junction, Livermore Falls, Bucksport, Rockland, and Orono. He then served as superintendent of the Augusta district of the Methodist church until his retirement in 1959. Throughout his career he devoted his efforts to helping the poor, the sick, and the troubled, whether in the army, the Maine woods, Thomaston State Prison, or in his parishes. From 1924 to 1928 he served as Superintendent of Social Service and editor of the company magazine The Northern for the Great Northern Paper Company in Greenville. His 1931 book The Penobscot boom was reprinted during the United States bicentennial year's revived interest in the history of logging in Maine.
Jack Love (real name Willie Frigon) was an inmate at the Maine State Prison in Thomaston.
Lucius Lee Hubbard (1849-1933) was state geologist of Michigan and a member of the Board of Regents of the University of Michigan.
Stanley Foss Bartlett was a Maine poet and worked for The Lewiston Journal. He was a frequent contributor to The Journal Saturday magazine with articles on life in logging camps and the Maine woods. He sometimes illustrated his articles with his own pen and ink sketches.
