Biographical History
Hannah Carpenter was presumably the widow or daughter of Samuel Carpenter (see following notes).
Andrew Bradford (1686-1742) was a printer and magazine publisher.
He was the son of the pioneer American printer William Bradford (1663-1752), who was one of the original partners in the company formed to build the first paper mill in America (1690) on land leased for 999 years from Samuel Carpenter, on Paper Mill Run, near Wissahickon Creek, near Germantown (Philadelphia, Pa.).
Nicholas (Claus or Clause) Rittenhouse (1666-1734) was a papermaker and paper mill proprietor.
He was the son of William Rittenhouse (1644-1708), one of the original proprietors of the first American paper mill (see above); this mill was destroyed by a flood in 1701 and a second mill built nearby, of which William and Nicholas Rittenhouse became sole proprietors by 1705 (Nicholas alone after his father's death in 1708).
