Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, Jr., was a businessman of Charleston, S.C.; Pinckney and his first wife, Lucy W. Memminger (d. 1874), were parents of Gustavus Memminger Pinckney (1873-1912), a lawyer and author; following the death of Lucy Pinckney, C.C. Pinckney married Annie Morris; Pinckney was admitted to the bar and began to practice law Mar. 1867.

C.C. Pinckney and his sister, Caroline Pinckney Mitchell, were the children of the son of Rev. Charles C. Pinckney (1812-1899) and the first of his three wives, Anne Randolph McKenna; with his second wife, Esther H. Barnwell (1824-1864), Rev. Pinckney had nine children, including Elizabeth Anne, Maria Henrietta, Harriott Elizabeth, Mary Barnwell, and Margaret Manigault Pinckney, several of whom's letters appear in this collection.

Charles Cotesworth Pinckney (1789-1865) was a planter of Charleston, S.C.; son of Gen. Thomas Pinckney and Elizabeth Motte Pinckney, and grandson of Chief Justice Charles Cotesworth Pinckney (1699-1758); served as Lt. Governor of South Carolina, 1832-1834; married Phoebe Caroline Elliott Pinckney (1791-1864) and their children included Charles Cotesworth Pinckney (1812-1898), Caroline (1816-1892), Thomas (1828-1915), and Mary Elliott (1833-1912).

The Rev. Charles Cotesworth Pinckney (1812-1898), an Episcopal priest, was born in Beaufort, S.C., and educated at South Carolina College (graduated 1831) and Alexandria Theological Seminary in Virginia. Ordained deacon in the Protestant Episcopal Church in 1835 and priest in 1836; in S.C., Pinckney served as rector of St. James Church, Santee, and Christ Church, Greenville, 1835-1845; assistant minister of Grace Church, Charleston, 1850-1854, and rector of that church, 1854-1898. He died at Flat Rock, N.C., on 12 Aug. 1898 according to the church memorial. Other sources give the year of death as 1899.
