Biographical History

Samuel Sinclair "Clair" Maclay was born March 6 1895, on the family homestead about 10 miles south of Lolo, Montana, the oldest son of Samuel S. and Helena "Nellie" (Sinclair) Maclay. He graduated from the University of Montana in 1922 and worked as a bacteriologist in Montana and Oregon. On the death of his father in 1934, he took over operation of the family ranch.

David Maclay was born in 1904, the youngest son of Samuel S. and Nellie Maclay. He also graduated from the University of Montana in 1928. He helped on the ranch until his brother took over in 1934 at which time he went to work for the Forest Service as a wildlife manager.

The brothers operated the ranch together during World War II. After the war Samuel continued to run the ranch while David went into business. David bought the ranch from his brother in 1962. Samuel S. Maclay died on May 13, 1993; David Maclay died January 24, 1997.
