Biographical History

Clement Biddle was a Philadelphia merchant and partner in his father's shipping house. During the American Revolution, he was appointed Quartermaster General for the Militias of Pennsylvania and New Jersey. In the 1780s and 90s, he served as George Washington's purchasing agent and produce seller at Mount Vernon. His son Thomas, a Philadelphia lawyer, married Christine Williams, daughter of Jonathan and Mariamne Williams. Their son, Colonel Alexander Biddle, was a Union officer during the Civil War who participated in the battles of Gettysburg, Fredericksburg, Rappahannock, and Antietam. Alexander's wife, Julia, was the granddaughter of Benjamin and Julia Rush. Alexander and Julia had 7 children: Alexander (who married Anne McKennan), Henry, Julia, Wilmer, Louis, Marion, and Lyndford.
