Biographical History

Prominent northern California Democratic Party politicians (1870-1940). Father, Denis Joseph Oullahan, lived in San Francisco. Son, Alexander C. Oullahan (1871-1941), rose through city council to Mayor of Stockton (1916-1920). He was later secretary-manager of Stockton Chamber of Commerce (1921-1925). He was instrumental in construction of Stockton Civic Auditorium and active in promotion of Stockton as "gateway" to Yosemite; in promotion of flood control through construction of Hogan Dam on Calaveras River; and, in promotion of Stockton's Deep Water Port. Alexander Oullahan's writings and correspondence about social and civic affairs in Stockton and San Francisco with his future wife, Katherine River Oullahan (1890s), comprise important elements of collection. Also included are writings of one of their daughters, Leanore J. Oullahan (1950s-1960s).
