Biographical History
British architect.
Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin (1812-1852), English architect, designer and author, was a leading figure in the Gothic Revival and the Oxford Movements. His designs include St. Chad's Cathedral, Birmingham, Balliol College, Oxford, and St. Augustine's Church, Ramsgate. His True Principles of Pointed or Christian Architecture (1841) inspired John Ruskin. During his last years he worked with Sir Charles Barry on the new Palace of Westminster. Pugin died in London on September 14, 1852.
English architect Augustus Welby Pugin was born in London, the son of French draughtsman Augustus Charles Pugin. He studied architecture, and wrote several books on the subject, which influenced Victorian architecture and the later Arts and Crafts movement. He designed and built furniture, stained glass, jewelry, and theatre sets. As an architect, he designed schools, country houses, and, after his conversion to Roman Catholicism, numerous churches; he also collaborated on the Palace at Westminster. After his untimely death, his son, Edward Welby Pugin, worked to complete the unfinished projects.
