Biographical History

John Duncan Mackie was born in 1887 , eldest son of John Beveridge Mackie and Lilias Agnes Robb. He married Cicely Jean Paterson, ward of James Donaldson, Principal of St Andrews University, in 1917 and had two sons and one daughter. He was educated at Middlesborough High School, England, and Jesus College, Oxford. He received a Second Class degree in Classical Moderations and a First Class in History. He held posts in History Departments at the St Andrews University , Scotland, and the University of London, England, before becoming Professor of Scottish History and Literature at the University of Glasgow in 1930 , a post he held until 1957 . He was Dean of Faculties from 1940-1945 and HM Historiographer for Scotland from 1958 until his death.

He served on many committees including the Scottish Records Advisory Council; Chairman of the Scottish National Register of Archives; Vice-President of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland; and President of the Scottish History Society. He served as Captain and Acting Major with the 14th Battalion Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders in the 1914-1918 World War and was twice wounded. In the 1939-1945 World War he chaired the Glasgow Joint Recruiting Board and was made Chevalier de la Legion d‰??Honneur in 1946 . His publications include: The University of Glasgow 1451-1951: A Short History (1954); A History of the Scottish Reformation (1960); and A History of Scotland (1964).
