Dr. Jack Shackelford was a physician, planter, industrialist, and soldier from Courtland, Ala. As a soldier he raised and captained a group of volunteers from Lawrence County, Ala., known as the Red Rovers, who traveled to Texas to aid in the state's fight for independence. Most of the group was killed with Colonel James Fannin's troops at Goliad in 1836. Shackelford survived the massacre at Goliad.
