Biographical History

English author and humourist.

From the description of Autograph note signed : [London], to Edward Du Bois, [n.d.]. (Unknown). WorldCat record id: 270664472

Author and clerk James Smith was born in London, and educated at home and at various private schools. He started as a clerk and eventually succeeded his father as Assistant to the Ordnance Solicitor. Although diligent in his work, his real interests were literature and the theatre. He wrote for a number of periodicals and theatrical publications, but is best remembered for the twenty-one poetic parodies published as Rejected Addresses, written with his brother, Horace. Published in 1812, the parodies were an immediate success, and remained popular throughout the 19th century. James wrote very little after this signal success, although he continued to be a presence in London literary society.

From the description of James Smith letter and poem, circa 1800? (Pennsylvania State University Libraries). WorldCat record id: 70247626
