Biographical History
Indiana territorial legislator; Illinois judge and U. S. Senator (1818-1829).
A descendent of Lord Baltimore, born in Hagerstown, Md., came west and studied law with his brother Richard Symmes Thomas in Kentucky. Moved to Indiana in 1803 and was elected to the Indiana Territorial Legislature in 1805. Elected to Congress in 1808 and appointed Judge of Illinois Territory in 1809, serving until 1818 when he was elected to the U.S. Senate from Illinois and remained in that position until 1829. Introduced the Missouri Compromise in 1820 and secured its adoption. In 1824 he campaigned for William H. Crawford for president and in 1840 for his friend William Henry Harrison. Moved to Mt. Vernon, Ohio in 1840.
