Wade Hampton was born in Charleston, S.C. on March 28, 1818 to a family that owned plantations in South Carolina and Mississippi. He became a general for the Confederate States of America during the Civil War, and was later elected governor of South Carolina and then senator. He died on April 11, 1902 in Columbia, S.C.
Wade Hampton I (1754-1835), was an army officer and United States representative from Virginia. Wade Hampton II was born in 1791 and died in 1858). Wade Hampton III (1818-1902), was a Confederate Army officer and governor and United States senator of South Carolina.
