Biographical History

John Nicholson came to Queensland in 1864 and purchased a property which was named "Grovely", and built "Grovely House". A proposal to build the church was raised in 1866, and work began in 1867. The foundation stone was laid by Sir George Bowen on 23 September 1867. The plan of the church was drawn by Charles Tiffin, Colonial Architect, and the church opened for services in February 1869.

Nicholson was an officer in the 3rd New York Regiment of the Continental Line during the Revolutionary War. After the war he was a merchant in Ulster County, N.Y. Nicholson was born in 1743 and died in 1811.
