Biographical History
Jabez L.M. Curry was born in Lincoln Co., Ga., on 1825 June 5. He graduated from the University of Ga. in 1843 and the Dane Law School at Harvard in 1845. He was a member of the Ala. legislature from 1847-1848, 1853-1854, and 1855-1856. He was a member of the U.S. Congress from 1857-1861, when he became a member of the Confederate Congress from 1861-1865. During most of the Civil War he was a lieutenant colonel, serving on the staffs of Generals Joseph E. Johnson and Joseph Wheeler.
After the Civil War he entered academia, becoming the president of Howard College (Ala.) In 1868 he joined the faculty at Richmond College (Va.) where he stayed until 1881. In that same year he became the general agent for the Peabody Education Fund and, in 1891, he became the general agent for the John F. Slater Fund. He published several small books, including one on William Ewart Gladstone. He died in 1903.
