Biographical History
Dr. Waller O. Bullock, born in Frankfort, Ky. November 28, 1875, attended Transylvania University (Lexington, Ky.) and graduated from the University of Virginia in 1896. After graduation he interned at Philadelphia's Polyclinic Hospital and in 1899 located in Lexington where he practiced medicineuntil 1946. During World War I he served as a major in the Army medical corps and later helped found the Lexington Clinic with Dr. David Barrow and his son Dr. Woolfolk Barrow.
Minnie Barbee Pettit was born in 1877 and grew up on a farm outside Lexington. She was married to Dr. Waller Bullock in 1907. In 1912 the Bullocks purchased the house on Market Street where they lived for the remainder of their lives. Mrs. Bullock's interests included gardening, sewing, birdwatching, and collecting snuff bottles. Katherine Rebecca Pettit, born in 1869, was Minnie Pettit Bullock's sister. Kate Pettit, along with May Stone of Louisville, Ky., played a significant role in bringing education to Appalachia when they established the Hindman Settlement School in Knott County and the Pine Mountain Settlement School in Harlan County. Among her many interests were collecting coverlets and folk tales and ballads of the region.
