Biographical History

Gladys Fisher, sculptor in stone, was born in Loveland, Colorado in 1906. Trained in New York and Paris, Gladys Fisher is known for her works 'Drinking Fawn' and 'Orpheus of the Indian.' Her sculpture of Gertrude Stein is the focus of this collection. Gladys Fisher met D.H. and Frieda Lawrence at a party in Paris; the Lawrences were impressed with Fisher's talent, and Frieda Lawrence later commissioned Gladys Fisher to sculpt a fox for D.H. Lawrence's tomb. Gladys Fisher died in Denver in 1952.

Alan Fisher, noted Denver, Colorado architect, was born in 1905. He was known for his hospital designs and his patronage of local art. Alan Fisher was also interested in New Mexico history and he wrote an article concerning Frieda Lawrence's experiences in northern New Mexico. Alan Fisher died in Denver in 1978
