Henry Hart Milman was an English author and clergyman, known as one of the most distinguished historians of his day. Born in London, the son of a baronet, Milman was educated at Eton College and Brasenose College, Oxford, where he enjoyed an outstanding prize-winning career. He had early success with the verse play Fazio, popular with audiences and actors alike; he went on to write numerous other plays, as well as poetry. Milman took clerical orders in 1816, and served as parish priest in Reading, rector and canon in Westminster, and dean of St. Paul's. He also taught poetry at Oxford, and wrote several notable historical works, including a landmark History of the Jews, as well as preparing numerous translations, including some of the earliest translations of Indian epics into English.
