Biographical History

In 1898 the Textile School at Clemson College was established with J.H.M. Beaty serving as head. The School was composed of three departments: carding and spinning, weaving and designing, and chemistry and dyeing. In 1908, C. S. Doggett was named director and textile courses were added. In 1927, Horace H. Willis was named director. The departments of weaving and designing and textile chemistry were established. In 1943, Robert Eaton was named dean; textile management classes were added. Hugh Brown was appointed dean in 1945. In 1949, the graduate program in textile chemistry was established. In 1957, Brown retired and Gaston Gage was named dean. 1958, the textile research department was created. In 1962, the School of Textiles and the Department of Industrial Management were combined to form the School of Industrial Management and Textile Science.
