Biographical History

Herbert Augustus Davidson, an African American physician, dedicated his life to serving the people and the community. On January 22, 1900, he was born in Statesville, NC, to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Davidson. While Davidson was still a small boy, the family moved to Richmond, Va. It was in Richmond that Davidson received his public school education, graduating from Armstrong High School in 1919. Before entering Virginia Union University, he was employed as a railway postal clerk. Upon receiving his degree in 1926, he taught chemistry at Dunbar High School in Lynchburg, Virginia, for two years. He was admitted to Howard Medical School in 1928, and, upon graduation, practiced in Winston-Salem, NC, for five years before moving to Barberton, Ohio, in 1937. He brought with him his wife, Tessie Virginia Davis, whom he had married in 1930. Davidson was active in several community organizations, including membership in the First African Baptist Church of Richmond; the Doylestown United Methodist Church of Doylestown, Ohio; the Summit County, Ohio State, and American Medical Societies; and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. In addition, Davidson founded and directed the Dunbar Life Insurance Company of Cleveland and organized the Carver Thrift Club of Barberton and the American Welfare Worker's Club. He was highly concerned with the welfare of the community -- not only medically, but socially and economically. He wrote numerous articles and letters to newspapers, magazines, and political officials in an effort to further equality and justice for all people. Dr. Davidson died on October 3, 1974, at his home in Barberton, Ohio.
