Biographical History
Pioneer Ouachita County, Arkansas, family. Samuel Newton Bragg (1802-1880) and Hosea Bragg (1804-1889) established small Arkansas plantations during the early 1840s after migrating from Alabama. Hosea's son, Walter Newport Bragg retained most of the old plantation while his own son, Peter Newport Bragg (1887-1963) went on to become an educator at Helena, Texarkana, and Fayetteville, Arkansas. Peter also served in the First World War as a 2nd Lt. in the 339th Field Artillery. Peter's son, John Smith Bragg (b. 1921) was a farmer and rural postal carrier in Ouachita County. He served in the Second World War as a first sergeant and squad leader in Company A, 161st Infantry, 25th Division and is the donor of the collection.
