Biographical History

George Dewey Crawford was born in Cornelia, Ga., at the end of the 19th century. He attended Cornelia public schools, Piedmont College, the University of North Carolina (Class of 1920), and Emory Law School. At UNC, Crawford was active in many clubs, publications, sports teams, and theather productions. He was a member of the Carolina Playmakers, along with Thomas Wolfe and Paul Green. He married Mary Creech Williams and practiced law in Fort Pierce, Fla.

George Dewey Crawford was born in Cornelia, Ga., at the end of the 19th century. After attending Cornelia public schools with his brothers, Todd, Vernon, and Kenneth, he moved on to Piedmont College in Demorest, Ga. He continued his studies at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill as a member of the class of 1920. Crawford was active in the school, serving on the staff of several student publications, including, The Magazine, where he held the post of business manager. His other affiliations included the Dialectic Literary Society, the Debating Council, Epsilon Phi Delta, and several sports teams. Crawford was also the president of the YMCA and served as a lieutenant in the student battalion. He was also very active in the theater. He took part in many of the student productions put on at UNC and was a member of the Carolina PlayMakers, along with Thomas Wolfe and future Pulitzer Prize winner Paul E. Green. After graduation from UNC, Crawford attended Emory University's Law School. He moved to Fort Pierce, Fla., in 1923, to practice law. Crawford married Mary Creech Williams and had several children, including Mildred Crawford McTureous and John and Robert Crawford.
