Amelia Ransome Neville was born in 1937 in Columbus, Ohio, where her father was resident engineer of the Ohio Canal. In 1851, with her mother, she visited England and was presented to Queen Victoria. In Ireland she married Captain Thomas J. Neville, of the British Army. He resigned his commission to come to California with Amelia, and her family. She made her home in San Francisco for most of her life. She died in her grandson's home in Montana in 1927. Her memoirs were published in 1932, titled: The fantastic city: memoirs of the social and romantic life of old San Francisco.
