William Nunn was born on November 14, 1902 in Loachapoka, Alabama. He earned a bachelor's degree from Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, Georgia (1922) and an M.A. in economics from Columbia University (1927). Nunn became the first director of University Relations at the University of Minnesota in 1945. Before coming to Minnesota, Nunn was an instructor of economics at Oita College, Japan (1922-1926), the University of Pittsburgh (1927-1929) and New York University (1929-1931), and professor and chair of the Department of Economics at the University of Newark, now Rutgers University (1929-1945). He also served for three years in the United States Navy during World War II, attaining the rank of Lieutenant Commander.
Throughout his career, Nunn was very active in the labor movement. He was chairman of the Newark Labor Relations Board, supported the coal miners strike in Pittsburgh and was a frequent contributor to The Labor Monthly Review of the United States Department of Labor . William Nunn retired from the University of Minnesota in 1971 and died in March 1991.
