George V. Underwood, Jr. was a United States (U.S.) Army officer. He graduated from the United States Military Academy (USMA), West Point, New York in 1937. He rose to the rank of full general before his retirement from the military in 1973.
George Vernon Underwood, Jr. (b. Dec. 17, 1913, Indianapolis, Ind.-d. 1984), U.S. Army officer, graduated from West Point in 1937. He served with the operations division, War Department General Staff, and at U.S. Forces HQ, China Theater, during World War II. Following the War, he was executive officer to General George Marshall, presidential envoy to China; served with the plans and operations division, Department of the Army General Staff; was assigned as commanding officer, 867th Antiaircraft Artillery Battalion, in Alaska; and served as director, Executive Office of the Secretary of Defense. During the 1960s he served as deputy chief and chief of information, U.S. Army; commanding general, 32nd Army Air Defense Command; and commanding general, U.S. Army Air Defense Center. Near the end of his career, he was commander in chief, U.S. Southern Command; commander, Aerospace Defense Command; and commander, 5th U.S. Army. He retired in 1973.
