Kertész, André. American Photographer. Born: Andor Kertesz in Budapest, Hungary, 2 July 1894; emigrated to France, 1925, and to the United States, 1936; naturalized, 1944. Education: Studied at the Academy of Commerce, Budapest, 1910-12; self-taught in photography. Military Service: Served in the Austro-Hungarian Army in Poland, Albania, and Rumania, 1914-15. Family: Married Elisabeth Sali in 1933. Career: Photographer from 1912. Worked as an accounts clerk, Budapest Stock Exchange, 1912-14, 1918-25; freelance photographer, working for Frankfurt Illustrierte, Berliner Illustrierte, Uhu, Strasburger Illustrierte, Le Nazionale de Fiorenza, Vu, Sourire, The Times, London, Paris, 1925-35; Contract Photographer, Keystone Studios, New York, freelance photographer, New York, 1962 until his death in 1985.
