Buckingham, Charles G., 1846-1940.

Charles G. Buckingham was born at Van Wert, Ohio, in 1846. He left Kenyon College, Ohio, in his sophomore year due to health problems and worked for 6 months at the First National Bank of Van Wert. He moved to Colorado in 1870 with Dr. Charles Emerson to join the Union Colony in Greeley. With H. T. West, the men established the banking firm of Emerson, West and Buckingham. Buckingham remained a partner in that firm until moving to Boulder in 1874.

Upon moving to Boulder, Colo., in 1874, Charles G. Buckingham and his younger brother Walter founded the Buckingham Brothers' bank, which opened on 22 April 1874. On 10 April 1877 the bank was reorganized and re-chartered as the National State Bank. Buckingham was elected president of the bank and remained so until his death on 13 July 1940. At the time of his death, he was said to have been the oldest banker in the U.S., in terms of both age and tenure.

Belinda Cooley Buckingham was the wife of Milton Buckingham.

According to an obituary in the Denver Post on 17 July 1940, Charles G. Buckingham, president of the National State Bank of Boulder for the past 66 years, was believed to have been the oldest banker in the U.S., both in terms of age and in length of service. Buckingham moved to Greeley, Colorado from Van Wert, Ohio (his birthplace) in 1870, and in 1874 with his brother Walter opened the Buckingham Brothers' bank in Boulder. In 1877 it became the National State bank.

Charles G. Buckingham, who never married, was one of the wealthiest men in northern Colorado. He owned several business blocks in Boulder, and farming acreage near Loveland. He also invested large sums in several toll roads, and practically owned the Boulder Hotel company.
