Biographical History

The Southwest Parish and Neighborhood Federation (SPNF) was founded in 1972 as an umbrella organization for eight neighborhood groups in or near the Gage Park community area in Chicago (Ill.). At the time of the SPNF's founding, this area was largely Roman Catholic. The SPNF offered programs on a variety of topics including neighborhood development, senior citizens' issues, transportation, and crime. In 1983, the SPNF and the Northwest Neighborhood Federation (NNF) created the Save Our Neighborhoods, Save our City Coalition (SON-SOCC), which focused on home equity, real estate scams, housing policy, and education.
