Biographical History

The Union Depot Company was organized on August 20, 1872, to assume the operation of a union passenger station in Columbus, Ohio, constructed in 1852 by the Columbus & Xenia and Cleveland, Columbus & Cincinnati Railroad Companies. A new station was built in 1876, and the third and final station and train shed were constructed in 1897. The station was jointly used by the Pennsylvania Railroad, the New York Central Railroad, Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway, and the Norfolk & Western Railway. The rail property was conveyed to Consolidated Rail Corporation on April 1, 1976, and the Union Depot Company was merged into the Penn Central Corporation on December 31, 1981.
