Biographical History

Port Republic, Virginia, one of the oldest towns in Rockingham County, was founded in 1802. It particularly flourished during the 1820's and '30's after the South Shenandoah River was made navigable for flatboats. It is best-known today as the site of the Port Republic battle of 1862.
