Born at Chester, Vt., June 28, 1814; taught school in Franklin, N.Y., 1830-36; moved to Rochester, N.Y. ; studied law ; moved to Manchester, Mich., 1838 ; was admitted to the bar and began practice, 1839 ; moved to Tecumseh, 1841 ; moved to Adrian and was prosecuting attorney for Lenawee County, 1843-50 ; city attorney of Adrian ; mayor of Adrian, 1856 ; judge of the Probate Court of Lenawee County, 1856-60 and 1871-76 ; member of U.S. Congress, Republican, 1861-71 ; died in Adrian, Sept. 27, 1882. Born in Chester, Vermont, Jun. 28, 1814. At sixteen became teacher and after 7 years fitted himself for college at Malone Academy. Studied law in Rochester, New York in 1837 and in 1838 emigrated to Michigan. Helped organized the Republican Party and was vice president of the great convention at Jackson.
