Biographical History

The School for New Learning was founded by Dr. Howard Sulkin, Dean, with the assistance of Marilyn Stocker, Associate Dean, and Ann Kurland, secretary. The planning began in 1972 with grant money from the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education. The team conducted research: identifying the needs, learning style, development stages, and personal goals of the nontraditional student. The nontraditional student was defined by an adult with the minimum age of 24 wanting to further his/her education. They decided five main domains of knowledge that were key factors to planning SNL: vocational/career, communication/interpersonal, the Community of Man, quality of life, and lifelong learning. In 1974 SNL opened the Northwest Learning Center in Park Ridge. In 1981, Dean, Dr. Howard Sulkin, retired and David Justice became the Dean of SNL. In 1984, SNL received a three year grant from the U.S. Department of Education to design a graduate program, and in 1985 graduate students were admitted to the school. Since 1995, deans have included Susanne Dumbleton and Marisa Alicea.
