Biographical History

Born in Ireland, John Anthony DeBerniere became an officer in the British army. He married Anne Jones (d. 1821), who gave birth to twelve or thirteen children, including Louisa DeBerniere (1779-1846), who married Robert Lane in Fayetteville, N.C. in 1799. In that same year John A. DeBerniere had moved his family to America, first settling in Fayetteville, N.C. He later moved to a plantation called the Grange, near Deep River, in North Carolina. Still later DeBerniere lived in Columbia, S.C., and finally Charleston, S.C., where he died and is buried. The daughter of Louisa and Robert Lane, Louisa Rebecca Lane (1806-1877), married Edward McCrady (1802-1892) in 1829.
