Biographical History
Robert Kendall Enders (1899-1988) was born in Essex, Iowa. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan in 1925. He became an assistant professor of Biology at Union College in 1927, and in 1928 became an assistant professor at Missouri Valley College, where he was promoted to full professor in 1932. He was also appointed Emeritus Professor of Zoology at Swarthmore College in 1966. He retired from Missouri Valley College in 1970. Enders visited Barro Colorado Island in 1930 with a National Research Council Fellowship. In 1935, 1937, and 1941, Enders revisited the island again as a research fellow of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia. As a professor, he would travel to Panama, often bringing some of his students. While conducting research in mammalogy on the island, he observed the development of the research station.
