Dr. Charles Dekay Cooper (ca. 1706/9-1831) was born in Rhinebeck, Dutchess County, New York. He removed to Albany, New York in 1792 and was employed as a physician. He married Margaret Venor Tayler, the natural daughter of John and Eva (Van Valkenburgh) Venor and adopted daughter of her uncle, John Tayler (1742-1829), an Albany public official. Dr. Cooper was appointed health officer of the port of Albany and held other political offices including Indian agent, clerk of Albany County, and Secretary of New York State (1817). Dr. Cooper, his son, John Tayler Cooper (1798-1878), and his father-in-law, John Tayler, were land agents in New York State in addition to their other occupations. John T. Cooper was a lawyer with Bloodgood and Cooper and an officer in the New York Militia, being Major-General of the Third Division.
