Born in Indianapolis in 1908, Harold Courlander spent his life collecting and re-telling folk tales from Africa, Haiti, Indonesia, and the United States.
Author and specialist in African and Afro-American cultures. Graduate of the University of Michigan (A.B., 1931) and winner of Hopwood Awards for creative writing, 1931 and 1932.
