Biographical History

Clyde Holbrook was born in 1911 in Greenfield, Massachusetts. He earned the B.A. in Religion from Bates College in Maine in 1934, the B.D. from Colgate Rochester Divinity School in Rochester, New York in 1937, and the Ph. D. from Yale University in 1945. He was ordained to the Baptist ministry in 1937 and while in graduate school held pastorates at Weston, Connecticut (1937-42) and New Haven (1942-45). He was Dean of Chapel Associate Professor of religion at Colorado College (1945-49) and chairman of the religion deartment at Denison University (Ohio). He joined the Oberlin College faculty in 1951 as Professor of Religion and chairman of the Religion Department, serving as chairman for twenty-four years. From 1951 to 1956, he was Professor of Christian Ethics at the Oberlin College Graduate School of Theology. In 1957, he was appointed to the newly created Danforth Chair of Religion. Holbrook was the author of books and articles and a popular preacher. He retired in 1977 and died in 1989.
