Biographical History

Virginia Staudt Sexton was born as Virginia Staudt on August 30, 1916 in New York City. In 1936 she graduated cum laude with a B.S. in classics from Hunter College of CUNY. Staudt taught elementary school then returned to school earning a Masters in 1941, and completed a Ph.D. in experimental psychology at Fordham in 1946. While finishing her degree, Staudt began teaching at Notre Dame College of Staten Island.

A 1952 Ford Foundation Faculty Fellowship allowed Staudt to leave Notre Dame to receive postdoctoral training in neuroanatomy at Columbia and clinical psychology at New York State Psychiatric Institute. a well-known article on the effectiveness of shock therapy "A Biometric Evaluation of the Somatotherapies in Schizophrenia" was published with mentor Joseph Zubin in 1957. In 1952, Staudt returned to academia as an instructor at Hunter College, where she remained until retirement in 1979.

Sexton passed away on May 24, 1997.
