The American Repetory Theatre was founded in 1980, and is physically situated within Harvard University's Loeb Drama Center. The A.R.T. is a professional not-for-profit theatre that maintains a resident acting company and an international training conservatory.
The Loeb Drama Center at Harvard University opened in 1960 and housed the Harvard-Radcliffe Dramatic Club as well as other dramatic groups including the Agassiz Theatre (Agassiz House, Cambridge, Mass.); Dunster House Drama Society (Harvard University); Harvard University. Leverett House; Hasty Pudding Club, and Harvard University. Summer School of Arts and Sciences.
Since 1980, The American Repertory Theatre (ART), a not-for-profit, professional, resident, repertory theatre company, has been in residence at the Loeb Drama Center. The Loeb's 556-seat theatre is the venue for most ART productions, as well as fall and spring main stage productions of the Harvard dramatic societies.
