Biographical History

U.S. naval officer; commander of U.S.S. Perry off west coast of Africa and of U.S.S. Portsmouth as part of East India Squadron involved in Battle of the Barrier Forts near Canton, China (1856).

Foote was born in New Haven, CT and joined the navy in 1822. He served in Africa and the Caribbean and during the Civil War was in command of naval operations in the upper Mississippi River. He was promoted to rear admiral, but retired due to wounds received and died in 1863 in New York.
