Biographical History

The State Park Commission was established by a legislative act in 1935 (1935 Laws of N.M., Chp. 57, Sec. 1). In 1963 the Commission changed its name to State Park and Recreation Commission. In 1977 a legislative act abolished the State Park and Recreation Commission (1977 Laws of N.M., Chp. 254, Sec. 4). The same 1977 legislative act established the Natural Resources Department and its State Parks and Recreation Division and transferred the functions of the State Park and Recreation Commission to that Division (1977 Laws of N.M., Chp. 254, Sec. 2-3). In 1987 a legislative act abolished the Natural Resources Department and transferred the State Parks and Recreation Division to the newly-established Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department (1987 Laws of N.M., Chp. 234, Sec. 3 and 83). The State Parks and Recreation Division's purpose is to manage and maintain parks, and encourage and promote outdoor recreation activities and tourism in New Mexico.
