Biographical History

Organization founded in 1920 and devoted to the promotion of the arts and sciences associated with the manufacture and treatment of metals.

American Society for Metals (f. 1913) was started in Detroit, Michigan, by William Park Woodside. The society "is devoted to the promotion of the arts and sciences... with either the manufacture or the treatment of metals or both." From an initial membership of 16, the organization grew to over 30,000 members by 1960 and a total annual income of over $2.6 million by 1958. It relocated its office to Prospect and East 46th Street in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1920, and later moved to 7301 Euclid Avenue. The society has held annual conventions, with the 1946, 1949, 1953, 1956, 1958, and 1963 conventions hosted in Cleveland.
