Biographical History

The Michigan State Association of Colored Women was founded in 1895 by a group of Michigan women who had attended the National Association meeting in Chicago. For administrative purposes, the state was divided into three districts, namely the Greater Detroit, the Central, and the Western. Within each district there are women's clubs in many of the urban areas. Each chapter is involved with civic affairs at the local level, and all activities are coordinated at or monitored by the state office.
