Biographical History
The UW School of Nursing was only the second school of nursing in the United States to be based in a university, and the first on the West Coast. After UW President Henry Suzzallo recommended the development of a five-year nursing education program in 1918, Elizabeth Sterling Soule organized the Department of Nursing in 1922 and began offering graduate degrees in 1923. In 1932, the department received its own building on the UW campus and, in 1945, nursing became an independent school with UW Health Sciences with Soule as the first dean.
The University of Washington's Department of Nursing was established in 1922. In 1945, the School of Nursing became an independent school within the University's Health Sciences department. It was the first nursing school on the West Coast and only the second university-affiliated nursing school in the United States.
