Biographical History

Richard West Habersham, son of Richard Wylly Habersham and grandson of James Habersham, Jr., was a portrait artist. He was born in 1812 near Beaufort, South Carolina and painted in both Georgia and Charleston, South Carolina. He married Martha Matthewes; together they had eight children. Habersham wrote The Honor of Jehossee in 1853, edited a monthly periodical, "The Self Instructor," and wrote many articles for Savannah newspapers under his initials "R.W.H." He owned the plantation "Walnut Hill" on Port Royal Island in Beaufort and was a member of St. Helena's Episcopal Church. He donated many of his portraits to the Georgia Historical Society in the 1880s. Richard Habersham died in 1889.
